An emergency blanket (or space blanket) is an ultra-lightweight, waterproof sheet made of aluminized Mylar designed to prevent hypothermia. Originally developed by NASA in 1964, it reflects and retains up to 90% of a person's body heat, making it a critical staple for survival kits, hiking gear, and first aid.
- To retain heat: Wrap the blanket completely around your body with the silver side facing inward toward your skin. This ensures the reflective surface bounces your radiant body heat directly back at you.
- To block elements: The blanket creates a highly effective wind and moisture barrier.
- To deflect heat: If you are dealing with extreme heat or sun exposure, wrap the blanket with the silver side facing outward away from your body. This reflects the sun's harsh rays and keeps you cooler.
- Improvised shelter: Tie the blanket to trees or poles with cordage to create a highly reflective sun shade or lean-to.
- Ground tarp: Lay it on damp ground to create a waterproof barrier under your sleeping bag.
- Signaling: The highly reflective, metallic surface acts as a bright visual marker or heliograph mirror to catch the attention of search and rescue teams.
